PIPE BURST AT FREEDOM PARK MEMORIAL SITE, DUKATHOLE, MALETSWAI
On Monday 30 September 2024, a pipe burst was identified on a bulk water line in the area of the Freedom Square Memorial Site in Maletswai. The break in the line was located within the grounds of the gravesites, posing a significant challenge to repair, due to the cultural and historical importance of the site.
As the country has recently concluded Heritage Month, which recognizes the importance of cultural symbols and heritage, we are particularly mindful of the significance of this site. The Freedom Square memorial is a vital part of our community, honouring those who have passed and serving as a place of reflection and remembrance.
During the process of identifying the pipe burst, it was determined that a grave had been damaged by water. Protocols involving forensic services and the services of a funeral parlour have been utilized to ensure that the human remains are recovered, stored, and will be reburied once the area has dried. This careful approach underscores our commitment to preserving the dignity and sanctity of the memorial site.
To minimize disturbance to the graves erected above the bulk line, Joe Gqabi District Municipality’s water provision team is rerouting the line around the memorial. This decision was made to ensure that the integrity of the gravesites is maintained and that the cultural heritage of the area is respected. Our team is working diligently to complete this rerouting as quickly and efficiently as possible.
We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we urgently address this repair. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and are committed to resolving the issue with the utmost respect for the memorial site and the community it serves.
