The Joe Gabi District Municipality (JGDM) Executive Mayor, Councillor (Cllr) Nomvuyo Mposelwa, today officially handed over the site for the Lady Grey Water Supply New Trunk and Reticulation Water Mains Project, marking a major step towards improved access to clean and reliable water for the local community.
Valued at R31.2 million, the project focuses on upgrading and extending the bulk and reticulation water network in Lady Grey, with specific attention to Khwezi-Naledi and Transwilger. It aims to address long-standing challenges such as low water pressure, uneven distribution, water losses and unreliable supply.
The scope of work includes the construction of new bulk and distribution pipelines, establishment of reticulation supply zones, installation of bulk and zone meters, leak detection and repairs, refurbishment of vandalised boreholes, and the retrofitting of plumbing fittings in selected low-income households.
“These interventions form part of a comprehensive Water Conservation and Water Demand Management programme, also improving fire-flow capacity for safety and business protection”, explained Cllr Mposelwa.
The project is expected to create approximately 20 local job opportunities during its implementation period. The appointed contractor, Segabokeng Building Construction, commenced work in October 2025, with completion scheduled for June 2027.
The Municipality has called on communities to protect the new infrastructure against vandalism, illegal connections and water wastage, emphasising that safeguarding water resources is a shared responsibility.
