The Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Honourable Zolile Williams, officially launched the Provincial Back to School Initiative on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, at Alheit Van Der Merwe Primary School in Maletswai. The launch aimed to reaffirm government’s commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment for learners across the province.

The event was supported by key stakeholders, including the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, COGTA, and several provincial departments and partners. MEC Williams highlighted that government is making every effort to ensure learner comfort at schools and encouraged learners to approach the academic year with excitement and dedication, assuring the Joe Gqabi District community of continued support for education.
