The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM) Mainstreaming Unit led by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA’s) Women Commissioner and JGDM Councillor Nomfundo Mabunu, supported the MEC for Social Development, Ms Bukiwe Fanta at a Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Awareness event today, held at Huis Vander Host Hall in Maletswai.
The event was intended to raise awareness and fight the scourge of GBVF, using the Orange Day campaign – a global United Nations initiative observed on the 25th of every month. It serves as a monthly call to action to raise awareness, mobilise communities, and end gender-based violence and femicide against women and girls.
The colour Orange, represents a bright, optimistic future free from violence, abuse, and fear.
MEC Fanta urged men and boys to stop killing children and women in our communities. She added that her government is committed to working with everyone, especially men and boys who have taken a stand against gender based violence.
The event is part of the department’s efforts of supporting grassroots organisations working with GBVF victims and survivors.
MEC Fanta presented a brand new car, donated by the Department of Social Development to Men Against Crime and certificates to 20 survivors of gender based violence, who were trained on Grade E, D and C Security courses for a period of three weeks (16 March – 3 April 2026). The training was conducted by Private Security Industry Regulatory Association (PSIRA) accredited Simamkele Security Services.
The occasion was graced by government officials, Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture , South African Police Service (SAPS), the non-governmental (NGO) sector including Men Against Crime and Mphatlalatsane Old Age Home elders
