Barkly East, 3 September 2025 – The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM’s) Water and Sanitation Payment offices are set to implement a cashless system following a council resolution that makes way for all 11 municipal cash offices to transition to cashless transactions.
From the 1st of October 2025, no cash payments will be accepted, and all transactions will be facilitated through card payments, all the major South African banking apps, external prepaid water vendors,South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cards, and online via Utilipay.
This is part of the municipality’s continued efforts to increase efficiency and convenience, enhance security to avoid the risk of theft or loss, simplify record keeping and create substantial cost saving measures within the district.
To ensure a smooth transition and allow adequate time for public awareness and the readiness of the system, the municipality has begun engaging with ward councillors and communities in Nqanqarhu on Tuesday the 19th of August and Burgersdorp on Friday the 22nd of August, with more community engagement sessions planned across all the local municipalities of the district.
“Further to the community engagements, we are rolling out an awareness campaign across all media platforms to minimise confusion and ensure that residents are not left behind during this transition,” said the Municipal Manager of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, Mcebisi Nojonjola.
In addition, walk-in support at the municipal payment offices will be provided until the 31st of October 2025 and residents can call the municipal call centre (0800 201 726) with any inquiries. All internal systems, payment platforms and external vendor networks will be evaluated and strengthened where necessary.
