The Eastern Cape Department of Community Safety, led by Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety, Honorouble Xolile Nqatha, in partnership with safety stakeholders and traditional leadership, today hosted a Community Safety Imbizo in Ngqayi, Tlokoeng, in the Elundini Local Municipality.
The engagement, held under the Social Crime Prevention Awareness Campaign, was intended to strengthen community safety, increase neighbourhood watch structures, report crime, condemn Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and substance abuse.
Representing the Joe Gqabi District Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor (Cllr) Unathi Hlathuka, commended the South African Police Services (SAPS), Community Policing Forum (CPF) structures and traditional leaders for working hand in hand to encourage community-police relations. “These partnerships are the backbone of sustainable crime prevention,” she said.
MEC Nqatha, in his keynote address, emphasised the dire need to work together for community safety and highlighted the department’s strides in assessing areas that need intervention. Furthermore, he handed over material including 70 blankets, 38 bags, 10 two-way radios and 20 torches to the peace committee of Ngqayi.
