The Joe Gqabi District Municipality (JGDM) Executive Mayor, Councillor (Cllr) Nomvuyo Mposelwa, has officially handed over the site for an R81 million sanitation infrastructure project in Sterkspruit and Tapoleng, Senqu Local Municipality.

This major investment will address long-standing sanitation challenges by improving wastewater management and paving the way for safe and dignified water and sanitation provision. The project includes the construction of pump stations, nearly 20km of bulk sewer pipelines and related infrastructure to support the new wastewater treatment plant.

The project will run over 24 months, from December 2025 to November 2027, and is expected to drive local economic development – creating around 40 job opportunities for the local communities and participation of local emerging enterprises through subcontracting by the main contractor.

In her keynote address, Cllr Mposelwa hailed the project, saying, “this initiative reaffirms the municipality’s commitment to protecting public health, preserving the environment, and restoring dignity, while working hand in hand with communities to build a better future for all”.

Cllr Mposelwa also encouraged the safeguarding of municipal infrastructure by reporting incidents of vandalism and theft.
